On November 3, The Council On Sexual Orientation will present “Not In Our Town”, featuring Filmmaker Patrice O’Neill at 7:00 PM in the Mountainlair Gluck Theater.
Executive Producer Patrice O’Neill will be visiting campus and will present short films and features from NIOT.org, a new social netowrking site and tool set up for people working to stop hate crimes and build inclusive communities.
Her film is the inspiring documentary film about the residents of Billings, Montana who responded to an upsurge in hate violence by standing together for a hate-free community. In 1993, hate activities in Billings reached a crescendo. KKK fliers were distributed, the Jewish cemetery was desecrated, the home of a Native American family was painted with swastikas, and a brick was thrown through the window of a six-year-old boy who displayed a Menorah for Hanukkah.
“Not In Our Town” has become one of the country’s top resources for educators seeking to prevent hate violence. This NIOT presentation will compliment our local diversity initiatives, such as “oneWVU” and “Building an Inclusive Community” at WVU and in the Morgantown community.
This event is free and open to all.
This event is sponsored by the West Virginia Hate Crime Task Force, West Virginia Chapter of the NAACP, ACLU of West Virginia, WVU President’s Office for Social Justice, WVU Council on Sexual Orientation, WVU Center for Black Culture & Research, WVU BiGLTM, the Community Coalition for Social Justice, and the City of Morgantown.
